X+Y=38
Y=X+10
X+(X+10)=38
2X=38-10
2X=28
X=28/2
X=14 ANS.
14+Y=38
Y=38-14
Y=24 ANS.
PROOF:
24=14+10
24=24

The greater of two numbers is 10 more than the smaller. Their sum is 38. Find the numbers.
------------------
Equations:
g + s = 38
g = s + 10
-----------
Substitute for "g" and solve for "s":
s+10 + s = 38
2s = 28
