Question 707220: I have to write a system of equations for this word problem:
In a talent show of singing and comedy acts, singing acts are 5 min. long and comedy acts are 3 min. long. The show has 12 acts and lasts 50 min. How many singing acts and how many comedy acts are in the show?
I did:
5x+3y=50
x+y=12
What do I do next? Any help would be appreciated

Looks like I got the same set of equations as you.:)
Let x=number of singing acts
And y=number of comedy acts
We are told that x+y=12------------------------eq1
and also
5x+3y=50-----------------------------------eq2
What do we do next? Well, you wrote a system of equations for the word problem. If you also have to solve them, then I would multiply eq1 by 3 and get:
3x+3y=36---eq1a
next, I would subtract eq1a from eq2 and get:
2x=14
x=7---number of singing acts
substitute this into eq1
7+y=12
y=5---number of comedy acts
