108 = 6b [cross multiplication]
b=108/6=18

Because we have the numerator of each fraction we must compare those numbers, i.e. 6 and 12.
We can see that 12 is 2 times 6.
This means we have multiplied the top number of the fraction by 2.
For these fractions to be equal we must multiply the bottom number by the same amount that we multiplied the top number of the fraction.
This means we do
2 times 9 = 18
Therefore b = 18
