This problem may be a little tricky because you are subtracting a parenthetical quantity that contains both positive and negative signs for its terms. You can rewrite the expression by placing a 1 after the negative that comes before the first parenthesis. This is a simple trick will help operation on the expression by giving the actual answer. Using distributive property, we change the signs inside the parentheses by multiplying the -1. Then we just combine like terms. Here's my work:
-8x^3 + 2x^2 + 5x - (-6x^3 - 2x + 6)
-8x^3 + 2x^2 + 5x - 1(-6x^3 - 2x + 6)
-8x^3 + 2x^2 + 5x + 6x^3 + 2x - 6
-2x^3 + 2x^2 + 7x - 6
I rewrote the expression in descending powers of x with respect to terms inside and without the parentheses. You can leave the terms inside the parentheses like you have it and still simplify the expression. The expression would usually have to be written in descending powers of the variable (highest power to lowest power), but this depends on your teacher.
