If this problem is , then you treat z as if it is part of the numerator. It would look like this . Then your next goal is to isolate z. You multiply both sides by four. This will eliminate the four from the denominator on the left hand side and turn the 12 into a 3. Then, divide both sides by 3 to get rid of the three on the left hand side.
***If you want to get rid of a number in an equation like this, do the opposite of what it is trying to do. For example, the four is in the denominator; it is dividing the numerator. To get rid of it, you need to multiply.

If I were doing this problem, I would take the inverse of both sides so that way the math looks better when I try to separate that 4 from z. Taking the inverse is just flipping the fraction over upside down. Now we have Now get rid of that four attached to the z by dividing both sides by four and your done.
