Your goal in any equation with a variable in it--otherwise known as a letter--is to get that letter by itself.
Before we get the x away from the -5, which is stuck to it right now, we need to get rid of the 12 that's hanging around on that side of the equation.
To do this, subtract 12 from both sides(since it's +12, just make it opposite to cancel out the signs; - and + cancel each other out). But you have to do the same thing on both sides of the equation, so you also subtract 12 from the 6, which equals -6.
-5x=-6
Now, the -5 is still chillin like a villain around the x. Since whenever two numbers(or a variable and a number) are right next to each other, it means you're multiplying--for example, (3)(4)=12--you'll have to divide both sides by -5 to get rid of it, similarly to how you subtracted the 12.
x=6/5
The answer is positive because when two -'s are together, they cancel out to make a +. Always remember that - & - = +, but + & - = -.
