Question 669677: State the solution set to the inequality (x-1)^2>1 using interval notation.
Answer by DrBeeee(684) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Given
(1) (x-1)^2 > 1 or
(2) x^2 - 2*x + 1 > 1 or
(3) x^2 - 2*x > 0 or
(4) x*(x-2) > 0
One solution space is
(5) x > 2 which makes both factors on the left positive so the product is greater than zero.
The other solution space is
(6) x < 0, wherein both factors on the left are negative, which makes their produt positive or greater than zero.
The interval NOT allowed is the strip
(7) 0 < x < 2
Answer: x<0 and/or x>2.
