Question 669276: professor I'm having trouble understanding this problem. factor fx into linear factors given that k is a zero of fx.
Fx = 2x³-3x²-5x+6; k=1
the answer is: (x-1) (x-2) (2x+3)
but I don't know how to get that answer. thanks!

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
factor fx into linear factors given that k is a zero of fx.
Fx = 2x³-3x²-5x+6; k=1
the answer is: (x-1) (x-2) (2x+3)
-------
F(x) = 2x^3 -3x^2 -5x + 6
----
Use synthetic division:
1)....2....-3....-5....6
......2....-1....-6...|..0
2)
......2....3....|..0
----
Since x is a zero, x-1 is a factor:
Since 2 is a zero, x-2 is a factor:
Finally 2x+3 is a factor
