Starting with
1/4(7+3g) = -g/8
Distribute the 1/4
7/4 + 3/4g = -g/8
Group like terms
3/4g + g/8 = -7/4
Create common denominators
3/4g(2/2) + g/8 = -7/4
6/8g + 1g/8 = -7/4
7/8g = -7/4
Divide both sides by 7/8(same as multiplying by 8/7)
g = -7/4(8/7)
g = -2
...
Alternatively,
Start by distributing the 1/4
7/4+3/4g = -g/8
Multiply both sides by 8
14 + 6g = -g
Combine like terms
6g+g=-14
7g=-14
g=-2
...
Check
1/4(7+3(-2)) = 1/4
-(-2)/8 = 1/4
