Question 653023: A boat can travel 24 miles downstream in 2 hours. It can travel the same distance upstream in 3 hours. Find the rate, r, of the boat in still water and thr rate, c, of the current.
Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If you go 24 miles in 2 hours, you are going 12 miles per hour. Since that is downstream, the rate of the boat and the rate of the current are in the same direction, and the two rates add. The other direction, 24 miles in 3 hours is 8 miles per hour, but the current subtracts from the rate of the boat. Altogether you get:
Solve the 2X2 system. Use Elimination; you can do it in your head.
