If you are "suppose[sic] to add 4...", then you are probably supposed to solve this by completing the square, because that first step wouldn't make any sense if you were using the only other way to solve it, namely the quadratic formula. But if you are supposed to solve by completing the square, then the correct first step is to divide by the lead coefficient so that the lead coefficient becomes 1.



Now clear the constant term to the RHS:



Divide the first degree term coefficient by 2, square the result, and add the final result to both sides:



Collect like terms in the RHS and factor the perfect square in the LHS:



Take the square root of both sides, indicating positive and negative roots in the RHS:



Simplify.
