Question 585982: Beatriz thinks (1, -1) is a solution of y = 2x -1. Grace thinks it is not a solution. Who is correct? Explain your reasoning.
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If (1,-1) is a solution, then x = 1 and y = -1 should satisfy the equation. Let's see if it does.
y = 2x -1
-1 = 2(1) -1
-1 = 2 - 1
-1 = 1
Since the equation is false, x = 1 and y = -1 do NOT satisfy the equation.
Therefore, (1,-1) is NOT a solution.
