Question 578745: Trains A and B are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. train A is traveling at 40 miles per hour and train B is traveling at 44 miles per hour. Train A passes a station at 4:20 PM. If train B passes the same staion at 4:50 PM, at what time will train B catch up to train A?
Answer by dfrazzetto(283) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Essentially, train A has a 30 minute (1/2 hour) headstart, at 40 mph, that is 20 miles head-start
We want to solve for when the distance they travel is equal:
t is zero starting when train B passes the station:
D(a) = 40t+20
D(b) = 44t
40t+20 = 44t
4t = 20
t= 5 hours
5 hours from 4:50 PM, so 9:50 PM
