Go back and get your instructor to be a little more specific in the problem statement. Is it the first or last week of September? What do you consider to be the beginning of Winter? Does he need to have the new board for the entirety of Winter, or would it suffice to have sufficient funds available by, say, the Winter Solstice? The difference between the span of time between the first week of September and the third week of December as opposed to the span between the last week of September and the first week of November is significant. 12 weeks during which he earns $600 of disposable income meaning he has to save half of what he has left over after bills vs. 6 weeks of during which he earns $300 of disposable income meaning he has to save everything he earns after paying his bills. It is like the difference between the level of committment regarding a bacon and egg breakfast -- the chicken is interested, but the pig is fully committed.
