Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let first number be x
second number be y
x+y = 2x-15
x-y = 2y-5
x+y = 2x-15
-2x
x-2x+y=2x-2x-5
y-x=-15.....................(1)
x-y = 2y-5
-2y
x-y-2y=2y-2y-5
x-3y=-5....................(2)
add equation (1) & (2)
y-3y=-15-5
-2y=-20
/-2
y=10
plug y in (1)
10-x=-15
-x=-10-15
-x=-25
/-1
x=25

Let
represent the first number and let
represent the second number.
The sum of the two numbers is:
and twice the first number less 15 is:
and since "is" means "equals" we can say:
Similarly, the difference is:
And 5 less than twice the second number is:
Giving us:
Collect terms in each:
Leaving you with a nice little 2X2 system that is all set up to solve by the elimination method.

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
