Let c = Clay's age

Write an equation for each statement:

"Tyler is one year older than 3 times clays age."
t = 3c + 1
:
" The sum of their age is 21"
t + c = 21
:
Find c first. from the 1st equation, replace t with (3c+1) in the above equation
(3c + 1) + c = 21
3c + c = 21 - 1
4c = 20
c = 20/4
c = 5 yrs is Clay's age
then
t = 3c + 1
t = 3(5) + 1
t = 15 + 1
t = 16 yrs is Tyler's age
