FOIL is not a college-level topic, it is simply a mnemonic for expanding something in the form (a+b)(c+d). FOIL stands for first-outer-inner-last, meaning you multiply the first terms of each expression, multiply the outer terms, etc. So,
(a+b)(c+d) = ac + ad + bc + bd (note that a,c are the "first terms," etc.).
