the difference of two numbers is 5
Let x and (x+5) represent the smaller and larger number respectively
Question states***
x + (x+5) = 17
2x = 12
x = 6, the smaller of the two numbers
CHECKING our Answer***Larger is 11 (6+5)
6 + 11 = 17
