I.  Combine Like terms

II. Isolate 'unknown B' on one side of the equation

III.  read the value of B

  -B + 9 = -2B + 1   

   B + 9 = 1  |adding 2B to BOTH sides of EQ

    B = -8    |subtracting 9 from BOTH sides of the EQ
