Question 394308: Four friends have a penny, a nickel, a dime, and a quarter. Jeff's coin is smaller in size than Wendy's coin. Wendy's coin is worth five times as much as Linda's coin. Fred's coin is worth more than Wendy's.What coin does each friend have?
Answer by josmiceli(19441)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Wendy must have either a nickel or a quarter, since
25 = 5 x 5 (five times a nickel)
or
5 = 5 x 1 (five times a penny)
Therefore, If Wendy has a quarter, Linda has a nickel
and if Wendy has a nickel, Linda has a penny.
---------------------
The only coin that neither can have is a dime, since
10/5 = 2, and there's no 2 cent coin. Also
10 x 5 = 50, and no one has a 50 cent coin.
---------------------
Therefore either Jeff or Fred must have a dime
Jeff's coin is smaller than Wendy's, so he could have the dime
---------------------
Fred's coin is worth more than Wendy's. If that is so,
then Fred cannot have a penny or a nickel, since a nickel is
the least value coin Wendy can have
---------------------
So, Fred either has a dime or a quarter
Suppose Fred has a dime. Wendy would have to have the nickel.
Then Linda would have to have the penny, But Jeff's coin
needs to be smaller than Wendy's, and only the quarter is left.
---------------------
So, Fred can't have a dime and he must have the quarter.
That means
Fred has the quarter
Wendy has the nickel
Linda has the penny
Jeff has the dime, which is smaller than Wendy's nickel
