6x-9y=9; x=3
Find the value of y for the given value of x by first solving for y and then substituting for the value of x into the equation?
:
Solve for y
6x - 9y = 9
Subtract 6x from both sides
-9y = -6x + 9
Y has to be positive, multiply by -1
9y = 6x - 9
Divide both sides by 9
y = x -
reduce fraction
y = x - 1
:
Substitute 3 for x like it says, find y
y = (3) - 1
3's cancel
y = 2 - 1
y = 1
:
:
We can confirm this, x=3; y=1 using the original equation
6x - 9y = 9;
6(3) - 9(1) = 9
18 - 9 = 9
