Question 37520: Can you help me find the linear equation and solution to this problem?
A river has a current of 2mph. Find the speed of Leroy's boat in still water if it goes 30 miles downstream in the same time it takes to go 18 miles upstream.
Thanks
Alan

Answer by josmiceli(19441)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The times for going upstream is the same as downstream

Time equals distance divided by rate
rate of the river = 2 mph
rate of boat going downstream = 2 + b
rate of boat going upstream = 2 - b

Speed of boat in still water = 1/2 mph
