Using the FOIL method. Trying to simplify 5x squared + 4x - 1
5x^2 + 4x - 1
simplify by factoring then testing factors with FOIL (First Outer Inner Last)
(5x - 1)(x + 1) = 5x^2 + 5x - x - 1 = 5x^2 + 4x - 1
