Question 334706: Simple word problem. Two business partners agrEe to puch a business for 192000. One must pay 8750 more than 2/3 of what the other will invest? How much ea? Answer key states 109950 and 82050. How r they getting this answer. I am interpreting 2/3 wrong I think. .

Let represent the amount that one will pay. Then is the amount the other will pay. The sum is the total amount paid.

Solve for to get one amount, then subtract that amount from $192,000 to get the other amount.

2/3 x = 2x/3
8750 +2x/3
..
x+2x/3 +8750 = 192000
x+2x/3 = 192000-8750
(3x+2x)/3 = 183250
5x/3 = 183250
multiply by 3
5x = 3 * 183250
divide by 5
x= 3*183250/5
One will invest $109,950
The other the balance 192000-109950
= $ 82,050
