Question 262347: I am working in week eight of math 116. I am on problem 13 which the first part is a numberline graph. I was asked to choose the compound inequality, which I was able to do. However the second part of the question askes me to write the solution in interval notation. The problem is x<9 and x>=-6. Does anyone know how to do this problem? If so I really need some help.

To use interval notation, use a square bracket, [ or ], if the end point is included, and parenthesis otherwise. Use the union symbol, , to indicate "and" between two disjoint intervals. If there is no upper or lower bound on your interval, use or as appropriate. With or you NEVER use square brackets to include the endpoint -- there isn't one.

So for your particular problem:

[-6, 9)

Now x%3E=-6 can be written as -6%3C=x

Now you have

matrix%281%2C3%2Cx%3C9%2C+and%2C+-6%3C=x%29

Reverse these:

matrix%281%2C3%2C-6%3C=x%2C+and%2C+x%3C9%29

Now you can write these together as a continued inequality
like this:

-6%3C=x%3C9

That says x is between -6 and 9, INclusive of -6,
but EXclusive of 9, so on a number line the graph is

Notice that there is a closed circle at -6 and an open circle
at 9.  The interval notation is an abbreviation of the above
graph.  The left endpoint is -6 and the right endpoint is 9,
so the interval notation is 

         [-6,9)

The bracket "[" on the left next to the -6 indicates that the -6
is included, the parentheses ")" on the right indicates that the
9 is NOT included.
