See my Lesson Plans for Factoring. There must be a half dozen or more in algebra.com!! I give a summary in a few steps:

1. Take out a COMMON FACTOR if there is one.

2. Factor a TRINOMIAL into product of two binomials.

3. Difference of squares (like trinomial factoring!)
(Also in higher levels of math, difference of cubes or sum of cubes .)

4. Factoring by GROUPING.

5. College Algebra or Algebra II -- Polynomial methods.
