The elements of a set, also called its members, can be anything: numbers, people, letters of the alphabet, other sets, and so on. Set A, as described, has 2 elements, one is the number 1 and another is the set containing only the single element which is the number 1. Since a number and a set consisting of only that number are two different things, the set A consists of two different elements.
