To find the greatest common factor of these two terms, you need to break each term up into its’ basic components and then find what the two terms have in common.
6y^2 = 2∙3∙y∙y
15y^3 = 3∙5∙y∙y∙y
Now, remove common terms from each, and cross them out as you go, so you don’t make any mistakes.
The terms common to BOTH are 3,y,y. Thus, the greatest common factor is 3∙y∙y, or 3y^2.
