5 items can be selected from 12 items in   =  = 792  different ways.


It does not matter, what these items are: stocks, students, horses, teachers, cows, professors, cats, dogs, pencils, balls etc.


These numbers    are called COMBINATIONS, the same name is used to denote this combinatorics conception.
