The fourth term, x+1, is the second term, x-1, plus two times the common difference. Since the difference between x+1 and x-1 is 2, the common difference is 1.

The 6th term is the 4th term plus twice the common difference. Since the 6th term is 7 and the common difference is 1, the 4th term is 5.

The 4th term, 5, is x+1; so x is 4.

The first term is the second term minus the common difference. The second term is x-1, which is 3; since the common difference is 1, the first term is 2.

ANSWERS:
a. common difference = 1
b. first term = 2
c. value of x = 4
