.
2x + 4y = 14      (1)
5x - 2y = -1      (2)

In equation (1), divide both sides by 2. Keep equation (2) as is. You will get

 x + 2y =  7       (1')
5x - 2y = -1       (2')

Add equations (1') and (2') to eliminate y. You will get

x + 5x = 7 + (-1)

6x     = 6

 x =     6/6 = 1.

Substitute it into eq(1') to get  2y = 7 - 1 = 6,  y = 6/2 = 3.

Answer.  x= 1;  y= 3.

Solved.
