if the speed of the water is 40 centimeters per second, then a total of 5 minutes * 60 seconds per minute * 40 centimeters per second = 12,000 centimeters of water has passed through the pipe in 5 minutes.

since the cross section area of the pipe is 15 square centimeters, then the total volume of water that passed through the pipe should be 15 * 12,000 = 180,000 cubic centimeters of water.

there are 1000 cubic centimeters in 1 liter of water.

therefore, the number of liters of water that passed through the pipe in 5 minutes should be 180,000 / 1000 = 180 liters.

the water flowing through the pipe forms a cylinder.

the volume of a cylinder is the height of the cylinder times the area of the base.

that's pretty much the concept used.
