Question 4755: Solve this equation please (Also explain and show work):
A skirt's price was increased from $20 to $25. Find the percent of the increase. One guy explained it but it didn't make any sense, he put some information that I don't even think I needed. Please put it in lamest terms (middle school).

percentage increase/decrease is always worked out against the original price. So, how much has the skirt increased? answer is $5.

What fraction is this of the original price? answer is 5/20 --> 1/4 --> or 25/100 (all are the same fraction). Note percentage means "per cent" or "out of 100" so this final fraction (25/100) is a percentage --> the answer is 25%.

If you want to calculate the percentage from a fraction, simply multiply by 100 ie (5/20)*100 = 25%.

Hope this helps?
