Question 4640: Please show work and explain:
The price of a half-gallon of ice cream plus 5% tax is $3.15. What is the original price of the ice cream?

Answer by rapaljer(4671)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = cost of the ice cream.
.05x = tax on the ice cream.

Total cost = cost of ice cream + tax = $3.15
x + .05x = $3.15
1.05x = 3.15

Divide each side by 1.05:

x= $3.00 even!
