Question 435667: John's pay was cut by 15 % in a certain year. The following year he received a pay increase of 15 %. Was his final pay more or less than before the pay cut?

Let x = his final pay before the pay cut. Then
after the cut his pay was 0.85x. The next year this pay was increased by 15%, so his new pay is 1.15*0.85x = 0.9775x. Hence his (new) final pay is still less than his final pay before the pay cut.
