Pie charts are used to visualize data. Mainly they are used to show what portions of the whole are used for what purposes. Applications might be the national budget or the Jones family budget, total output of crops in the US broken down by categories, percentages of all students going into various college majors, percentages of people that prefer different types of movies...there are a million applications...
