I'm trying to study for a test tomorrow, and i had a question.
Here is the question.
The sales-tax rate in new York City is 8%. How much tax would be charged on a purchase of $428.86? How much will the total cost of the purchase be?

To find just the tax, multiply the cost of the item by 8% which is .08, now you have your item cost, and your total tax. In order to find total cost, add those two pieces together.
