4 7/9% is  the same as   percent =  percent =  percent =  = .

So, they want you find an unknown number x such that

    x +  = 300.

Thus you have this simple equation to find x.

First step to solve is to multiply all the terms by 900 to run of the denominators.
You will get then

    900x + 43x = 900*300

    943x = 270000

       x =  = 286.3203  (rounded).

Thus you found this mysterious number x = 286.3203.

To check, multiply it by 43/900 and add this product to 289.3203

       = use your calculator = 300. The check is done.

ANSWER. The unknown number is found now: it is 286.3203 (rounded).

Solved, with explanations.

The original "solution" from @josgarithmetic was gibberish (as, usually, half of his other posts are).

Then he waits until other solutions appear, disproving his results.

When he sees such solutions, he erases everything that he wrote before,
and re-write from other posts, re-telling them in his own words.

It is his standard "solution strategy" at this forum, which he uses just during several last months.

Really terrible "tutor", deserving to be removed from the forum.

Let number be x
300= 4 7/9 % x +x
300 = 43/9 %x +x
300= (0.43/9 )x +x
0.43/9 =0.0477x+x
300 = 1.048x
300/1.048
286.322 is the number.
