the rate of commission is 40%.
let x = the sales.
then the sales commission is equal to .4 * x
since the sales commission is 83.50, you get:
83.50 = .4 * x
divide both sides of this equation by .4 to get:
83.50/.4 = x
solve for x to get:
x = 208.75
that's the sales required to get a sales commission of 83.50
to confirm, .....
.4 * 208.75 = 83.5
