A worker's period of duty increases from 56 hours to 72 hours but the wages decrease by 15%.
By what percentage do the new total wages increase or decrease?
:
let x = original hourly wage
then
.85x = decreased hourly wage
:
Original total wage: 56x
Decreased total wage: 72(.85x) = 61.2x
Find the percent increase (x cancels)
* 100 = 9.3% increase in total wages

The number of hours gets multiplied by a factor of 72/56 = 9/7; the hourly wage gets multiplied by a factor of 85/100 = 17/20. The total pay gets multiplied by (9/7)(17/20) = 153/140 = 1.093 = 109.3% ( = 100%+9.3%).
The total wages increase by 9.3%.
