Question 1088997: A bookstore has 15,000 books in stock, of which 60 percent are paperbacks, and 40% are hardcover. All the books are either fiction or nonfiction. If 30 percent of all books are nonfiction and 2500 of the nonfiction books are paperbacks, how many of the books are both fiction and hardcover?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! you have 15000 books total.
60% are paperback, therefore 9000 books are paperback.
40% are hard cover, therefore 6000 books are hard cover.
30% of all books are nonfiction, therefore 4500 books are non-fiction.
2500 of the nonfiction books are paperback.
therefore, 2000 of the nonfiction books are hard cover.
6000 hardcover books minus 2000 nonfiction books leaves 4000 hardcover books that are fiction.
i believe that answers the question.
the breakdown would be as follows:
9000 paperback, of which 2500 are nonfiction and 6500 are fiction.
6000 paperback, of which 2000 are nonfiction and 4000 are fiction.
total nonfiction books equal 4500.
total fiction books equal 10500.
4500 / 15000 = 30%
