Taylor is looking at a pair of sneakers and trying to figure how much they cost originally. The tag says: “reduced 50%, then 20%, and now cost $84.” How much did they cost originally?
----------
Let the original cost be "x".
----
After 50% reduction:: 0.50x
-----
After 20% reduction:: 0.80*0.50x
-----
Equation:
0.80*0.50x = $84
----
x = 84/(0.8*0.5)
x = $210
