Question 239176: I have asked my teacher for help, but she says according to the school rules she cannot help me. She cannot even offer an example problem to give me the concepts needed to figure out this equation.
Selena left an 18% tip for a meal. The total cost of the meal, including the tip, was $40.71. What was the cost of the meal before the tip was added?
I came up with this formula
(x)(18%)=40.71
(x)(18%)/18%=40.71/18%
x=226.17
Which according to division rules, I am to move the decimal over....22.62 (rounding to the nearest tenth)
therefore 22.62 times 18% is 4.071, moving the decimal that would be correct.
Is there a rule for moving the decimal in these algebraic equations?
Thank you very much!
