Question 429176: I have no experiences using a logarithm so I need help trying to figure out how this formula works. Any assistance is appreciated.
Earthquakes The Richter scale is used to determine
the intensity of earthquakes, which corresponds
to the amount of energy released. If an earthquake has
an intensity of x, its magnitude, as computed by the
Richter scale, is given by R(x)= log x/i0 , where I is
the intensity of a small, measurable earthquake.
(a) On July 26, 1963, an earthquake in Yugoslavia
had a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale, and
on August 19, 1977, an earthquake in Indonesia
measured 8.0. Find the intensity x for each of
these earthquakes if I0 = 1
(b) How many times more intense was the Indonesian
earthquake than the Yugoslavian earthquake?

Question 430035: Hello, I am trying to find an answer using the Log function on the Windows scientific calcultor. The equation given to me is: Log 1000000 = 6 Log 1000 = 3 Log 1.01 = 0.00432 I see how to do this. The issue is the following: I am told to put these values into the formula:
6-3
----- = 694
0.00432
I cannot figure out how to enter the formulas or what keys to press to get the answer 694. I have tried everything without success. I think my biggest problem is not understanding what actual buttons to push or sequence of numbers to get to the answer 694. Also I think I am misunderstanding the minus sign in between the 6 and the 3. I have noticed the 6 is raised higher than the 3 in the original equation. Sincere Thanks, Ande Lu
