Question 33088This question is from textbook College Algebra
: pH problems. I don't understand what the negative sign in front of the equation really means. -log (H)=pH Does it simply the opposite?
Here's my problem (one of several), If the pH is 6.4, what's H? So -log H=6.4
Does this equation say -10^6.4=H? It musn't because that's not the answer. Through trial and error I determined to get the answer I raise 10 to the opposite of 6.4/ 10^-6.4=H I guess my question is how does the negative sign gets to the exponet (pH)? Is that too complicated to show via email? Should I just know "how" to plug in and run with it? I'd really like to know how though. I've done all the other problems in this chapter with no trouble. I don't get why I can't get this. Frustrating!

Question 33371: a) Using a calculator, find log 10000 where log means log to the base of 10.
b) Most calculators have 2 different logs on them: log, which is based 10, and ln, which is based e. In computer science, digital computers are based on the binary numbering system which means that there are only 2 numbers available to the computer, 0 and 1. When a computer scientist needs a logarithm, he/she needs a log to base 2 which is not on any calculator. To find the log of a number to any base, we can use a conversion formula as shown here: log(b,a) = log a/log b.

Using this formula, find log(2,10000).
