Question 135430: Hi. I'm am required to find x in this equation: log+%285%2C+%285-4x%29%29 = log+%28sqrt%285%29%2C+%282-x%29%29. My teacher told me answer is +1 or -1. I do know the formula - Change of Base Law - to solve the equation, but the problem is, I do not know how to apply the formula due to the square root of 5 as the base of the equation.
I've tried by using the formula to change log+%285%2C+%285-4x%29%29:
log+%28sqrt%285%29%2C+%285-4x%29%29/log+%28sqrt%285%29%2C+sqrt%285%29%29 = log+%28sqrt%285%29%2C+%282-x%29%29
log+%28sqrt%285%29%2C+%285-4x%29%29/1 = log+%28sqrt%285%29%2C+%282-x%29%29
5-4x = 2-x
-3x = -3
x = 1
However, I don't know how to find -1. Please teach me the correct method. Thanks.
(By the way, the answer is +1 with the + sign begin underlined. I hope you understand what I mean. And is this answer the same as 1 and -1? Thanks.)

Question 136498: Hi. I've been trying to solve this for about three hours. I know the solution is 11.0834645967, but I can't figure out how to get it within the constraints of the problem: Show how to solve the following equation in terns of the common logarithm. Also give an approximation of the solution to the nearest hundreth of a unit. 3^(2x-3)=5^(x+2)
My work is
log(3^2x-3)=log(5^x+2)
(2x-3)log3=(x+2)log5
2x-3=(x+2)log5/log3
(2x-3)/(x+2)=log5/log3
(2x-3)/(x+2)=logbase3 5
and then I get stuck. And I might have gone right past the correct route and gotten more tangled. Any help would be most appreciated.
