Question 82560: HELP:
Is my professor unreasonable or am I totally confused? I answered the other 6 questions, I think I have (math)brain freeze at this point, can you please solve these? He tried and I simply could not understand.
1)Using the index of a sequence as the domain and the value of the sequence as the range, is a sequence a function?
Include the following in your answer:
Which one of the basic functions (linear, quadratic, rational, or exponential) is related to the arithmetic sequence?
Which one of the basic functions (linear, quadratic, rational, or exponential) is related to the geometric sequence?
Give at least two real-life examples of a sequences or series. One example should be arithmetic, and the second should be geometric. Explain how these examples would affect you personally.
5) Logarithms:
a) Using a calculator, find log 10000 where log means log to the base of 10.
Answer:
b) Most calculators have 2 different logs on them: log, which is based 10, and ln, which is based e. In computer science, digital computers are based on the binary numbering system which means that there are only 2 numbers available to the computer, 0 and 1. When a computer scientist needs a logarithm, he/she uses a log to the base 2. To find the log of a number to any base, we can use a conversion formula as shown here:
Using this formula, find . Round your answer to the hundredth's place.
Answer:
Show work in this space
This is not from a textbook as far as I know, this is from a written assignment list.

1)Using the index of a sequence as the domain and the value of the sequence as the range, is a sequence a function?
Yes, it is a function.
------------------
Include the following in your answer:
Which one of the basic functions (linear, quadratic, rational, or exponential) is related to the arithmetic sequence?
Linear because a constant amount is added to form the next term after a given
term; this corresponds to a linear function where the slope indicates the
constant change in the y value of the function.
---------------------------------
Which one of the basic functions (linear, quadratic, rational, or exponential) is related to the geometric sequence?
Exponential because each term is formed by multiplying the previous term by
some constant called "r"
----------------------------.
Give at least two real-life examples of a sequences or series. One example should be arithmetic, and the second should be geometric. Explain how these examples would affect you personally.
Arithmetic: simple interest on money you have invested.
A(t)= Ao + Aort
The Ao is the amount you invest.
The A(t) is its value after t years
This in linear with a slope of (Aor) and y-intercept of Ao, or at the start".
Ao simply means "the amount you have at time zero
----------------
Geometric: compound interes on money you have invested:
A(t)=Ao(1+r/n)^(nt)
Same as above with "n" being the number of times it is compounded each year.
Since t is in the exponent the function is exponential.
You start the series with an amount Ao
At the end of each compounding period you multiply by (1+r/n).
That is why the series is geometric.
