The relationship between a telescope's magnitude and the diameter of the telescopes lens can be modeled by M=5logD=2 where M is the magnitude and D is the diameter(in milimeters) of the lens. If a telescope can reveal stars with a magnitude of 12, what is the diameter of the lens.
:
I assume the given equation should be this:
M = 5*log(D+2)
:
5*log(D+2) = 12
:
log(D+2) = 12/5
log(D+2) = 2.4
D + 2 = 251.1886; the anti-log of 2.4
D = 251.1886 - 2
D = 249.1886 millimeters or about .249 meters

Perhaps I have not interpreted this formula correctly, hopefully the method will help you anyway.
