This is just an expression. All you can do with an expression is simplify it.

The best I can tell is that this expression is from the Quadratic Formula. If so, then the entire first part of the expression is divided by 4:

To simplify this, we can start by multiplying the 4 and the 2 inside the square root:

and the minus in front of the 8 and the minus in front of the "e" cancle each other out:

This is as far as you can go without a calculator. And once you start using a calculator you are then dealing with a decimal approximation for the value of the expression.

"e" is a special, named number like . If you calculator does not have a key for "e", then use 2.7182818284590451 (or some rounded of version of this) for "e".
