Question 290802: what is x
log (x-3) - log 2= log(x+1) what are the steps to solve?
Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
log (x-3) - log 2 = log(x+1)
:
Add log(2) to both sides
log(x-3) = log(x+1) + log(2)
:
Subtract log(x+1) from both sides
log(x-3) - log(x+1) = log(2)
:
Subtracting logs is the same as divide, therefore we can write it:
= log(2)
the logs are equal, therefore
= 2
Multiply both sides by (x+1)
(x - 3) = 2(x+1)
:
x - 3 = 2x + 2
:
-3 -2 = 2x - x
:
-5 = x
;
However, a solution that results in the log of a negative number is not valid.
So we have to say no solution
